The Village

Talaton

This ancient rural village, with a population of about 600 and mentioned in the Doomsday Book, nestles close to the tiny river Tale from which it derives its name, town-on-the-Tale. It lies about seven miles from the market town of Honiton, four miles from Ottery St Mary, twelve miles from the Cathedral City of Exeter and eight miles from Cullompton, another ancient market town. It remains largely a working country village surrounded by actively worked farmland but it is fortunate that over a number of years the population has slowly increased and with it many changes have been embraced allowing Talaton to offer both the old and new ideals.

Talaton Community Shop

Village life often revolves around a Church, a Shop an Inn or in more recent times, a Parish Hall – Talaton has all four! Each of these is very active and well supported, as are the numerous other societies and groups that flourish within the village. Information on all of them may be found on this site and also in the excellent Talaton Calendar, a FREE monthly publication of articles of local interest that is delivered to all households in the Parish.
A digital version of the magazine is also included on this site.

Annual events that started decades ago, such as the Christmas How D'Ye Do and Open Gardens weekend have become regular features that continue to draw crowds from near and far. They have been joined more recently by the Pumpkin Competition, Carol Singing & Lighting the Christmas Tree and the hugely popular village BBQ.  Amateur drama groups have existed since the 1960's, the most recent being Community Theatre 4All. All events and groups are examples of an active and vibrant village.

Talaton Parish boundary includes Newtown, Larkbeare, Talewater and Escot.
